Now More Than Ever
it’s Time to Take Care
of Physicians

Our mission is to address the devastation and negative community impact of physician
burnout and suicide.

Established in 2018, the Nevada Physician Wellness Coalition is a non-profit organization headquartered in Reno, NV. We provide tools and resources to support physician and physician family wellbeing. To address the highly sensitive nature of physician burnout and associated stigma, NPWC operates independent of regulatory and licensure bodies, medical societies, as well as where a physician may be employed. As an autonomous entity, NPWC serves Nevada physicians, medical students, and families—regardless of place of employment or employment status.

Why Now?

  • The #1 cause of death today in the USA among medical trainees is suicide.

  • Approximately 400 MD/DO’s die by suicide each year, which is 4 times the national average.

  • 42% of physicians across the nation report suffering from symptoms of burnout.

  • Each time a physician dies by suicide approximately 2000 patients are impacted.

Why Nevada?

  • Nevada ranks 48th out of 50 for Board Certified physicians per 100,000 people.

  • The growth in our medical profession does not match Nevada’s population growth.

  • Additional pressure on an already strained healthcare system adds more pressure to the work of physicians which means the whole community suffers.

Our Approach Towards Sustainable Change

Breaking the Culture of Silence in Medicine

There is a disease plaguing the medical field: silence. There exists a culture of silence wherein physicians do not feel safe talking about their mental health. Threats of license revocation loom and physicians often suffer in silence. The NPWC is committed to changing this culture. By operating independently from any entity, we can create safety for physicians to share about their experiences.

Shifting the Stigma on Mental Health

Physicians often feel a pressure to “keep it all together.” Regarded in our society as larger than life, physicians especially experience stigma around mental health challenges. Through our programming, we bring physicians together and create a safe space to share experiences, helping physicians realize that they are not alone. We provide opportunities to give voice to their feelings and acquire supportive tools.

Our Commitment to Physicians and their loved ones.

The challenges of physician wellbeing extend beyond the office. Physicians’ loved ones may feel pressure to perpetuate the culture of silence and may suffer watching someone they care about struggle. The NPWC delivers programs that provide outreach, education, and supportive resources to physicians and their families to intervene at all stages of burnout and to prevent suicide. Additionally, we host an anonymous resource line that connects physicians and their loved ones to mental health care options within 24-48 hours.

Our Commitment to Workplace Wellbeing

We are committed to creating long-term, sustainable change. Hospitals looking to support their physicians can connect with us to ensure our programming is reaching their physicians. We offer Hospital and Private Practice packages designed to provide support and create community with physicians at that hospital. We further support physician wellbeing in the workplace by providing CME credits for our programming.
