Statewide Humanism in Medicine Series - Cohort 1

There is no charge to participate in the sessions, but pre-registration is required.

This program is targeted toward all clinicians who would like to look more deeply into the topics about how to better care for one's self as a clinician and the impact of that on patients, learners, and the practice of medicine.

This one-time per month series offers a variety of topics over the course of one year, which will be delivered in an experiential way. All of the topics will include a research component along with a way to practice what is being learned in the session.

  • Following participation in this course, participants should be able to:

    • Session 1 | Resilience | April 11 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

      • Cultivate a mindful clinical practice by building awareness and self-compassion

      • Examine the personal and financial toll of clinician distress

      • Provide safe, effective, and ethical care to patients by prioritizing self-care and wellness

    • Session 2 | Professionalism | May 9 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

      • Adopt personal strategies for improving responsiveness to challenging situations in the real world

      • Distinguish how by being attentive and mindful, one can practice more ethically and with a higher degree of professionalism.

      • Develop greater awareness of how bringing attentiveness in moment-to-moment challenges of professionalism during clinical practice can have a positive impact on patient care

    • Session 3 | Grief and Loss | June 13 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

      • Investigate the impact grief has on the professional and personal lives of the clinician

      • Explore healthy and ethical approaches to working with grief and loss

      • Recognize health care professionals’ experiences of grief and loss and its impact on patient care

    • Session 4 | Noticing | July 27 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

      • Explore meaningful experiences in clinical practice and how our attention, intentions and attitudes affect our experiences at work

      • Recognize the tendency of the mind to seek premature closure and how this might impact ethics in patient care

      • Explain how purposeful attentiveness to one’s own mental processes during everyday work is supportive in practicing medicine with clarity and compassion

  • As an accredited provider of continuing medical education through the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine must ensure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor in all its educational activities.     The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    Nurses: The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine approves this program for 1.00 hour of nursing continuing education credit.

    Ethics: This program provides 1 CME credit towards the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners' requirement for 2 hours of training related to ethics, pain management, or addiction care during each licensure period.
