Natalie Johns is a third year medical student at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and a native Nevadan. Natalie has shared how to make and use comics to serve a number of functions in healthcare as a guest lecturer for both graduate and undergraduate students at UNLV and to youth citizen scientists in Illinois.

During this presentation, you will seek to understand the core principles of Graphic Medicine and its significance in the healthcare landscape. We will explore the power of comics as a tool for healthcare providers to navigate the challenges, triumphs, and emotions they encounter in their daily professional lives.

No prior artistic skills are required—just an open mind and a willingness to express yourself through the universal language of images and words.

  • Following participation in this course, participants should be able to:

    1) Define the concept of Graphic Medicine and its role in healthcare, recognizing how visual storytelling can aid in personal processing and emotional expression for healthcare providers.

    2) Employ foundational knowledge of how to create a basic Graphic Medicine Comic, utilizing the key elements of storytelling through images, scriptwriting, character development, and visual representation to effectively communicate their experiences as healthcare providers.

    3) Describe the ethical elements of creating and sharing graphic medicine as a technique to improve communication, patient care, stress relief, and enhanced empathy.
